Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog said it will be a grand Dinagyang 2012 as Ilonggos celebrate the Diamond Jubilee Year, marking the 75th year of the city’s Charter.

Venue of the launching will be at SM City mall, though the program and other plans related to the festival are still being finalized, according to city tourism officer Benito Jimena.
The city government, Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation, Inc. (IDFI) and San Jose Parish will also sign the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the management of the festival.
Prior to this, Mabilog is set to sign an executive order on the composition of working committees for Dinagyang 2012 upon his return from official trips to China and Korea by end of the month, Jimena said.
Slated on Jan. 21-22, Dinagyang 2012’s tagline is “Beyond Awards, a Culture of Excellence.”
Mabilog wants the festival to be more than just the recognitions it has received and continue to obtain, as it focuses more on being a festival worthy of emulation.
Jimena explained the management of Dinagyang is now concentrating in inculcating a culture of excellence that will become the benchmark that others will follow and replicate.
“We want it to be sustainable and replicable,” he said.
Through the years, Dinagyang has made a track record no other festival has achieved, gaining global recognitions and representing the country in various international events, Jimena stated.
The Dinagyang 2011 edition is a finalist in the Project Award category of the International Awards for Liveable Communities (LivCom) to be hosted by South Korea on October 27 to 31.
Mabilog leads the Iloilo City delegation going to Seoul for the final presentation.
The 2011 festival edition has also been qualified for site validation by the Galing Pook Awards Foundation.
Jimena said the validating team conducted a random interview on Friday of stakeholders and beneficiaries to determine the festival’s results and impact on the community, how it has promoted people’s participation and empowerment, the innovations introduced, and proof of transferability and sustainability of the project.*PIORobe Jan Ivan Pagulonghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00467812108803615210noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2703915765571489791.post-90490732941507894962010-11-07T05:42:00.000+08:002011-12-13T08:54:44.015+08:00Ilonggo shoppers who excitedly packed the scene were met and greeted by celebrities Paul Jake Castillo and Dino Guevarra.
Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. president Ramon Cua Locsin signed a memorandum of agreement yesterday with the city government represented by Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and Fr. Achilles Secio, OSA of the San Jose Parish Church.

The city government will shell out P6 million while the IDFI will raise the remaining amount, Locsin said.

City Tourism and Development Officer Benito Jimena said the amount from the city government will be used as subsidy for participating tribes amounting to some P4.8 million and prizes for the winners.

He added that Mabilog is also planning to extend a P500,000 worth of projects to the winning barangay or schools in the Ati-ati contest.

In his message, Locsin said the signing of the agreement “exemplifies continues commitment and strong public-private partnership.”

“Dinagyang has served as driving force for Ilonggos to work together to succeed,” he said.

Mabilog, meanwhile, hoped the festival will continue to produce results likewise for it to continue serving as a “model festival in the country and best practice for other cities to follow.”

“Eight years ago, Dinagyang was just a simple but colorful celebration. A festival that shows what Iloilo City is all about. After eight years, Dinagyang has transformed into what it is today, a premier world class festival,” he said.

Fr. Secio said the festival has “become a useful part of our life, being a fully alive people with faith.”

Secio expressed hope that the IDFI will continue to “promote camaraderie and the community as people of God and as independent body with faith.”*PNARobe Jan Ivan Pagulonghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00467812108803615210noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2703915765571489791.post-3986673934780315832010-10-29T16:03:00.000+08:002010-11-04T16:37:33.096+08:00German group eyeing ‘kasla’ plantations in IloiloA group of German investors is looking for areas in Iloilo province where they could plant jatropha, locally known as “kasla,” to be used for power generation.

Officials of Kasla Energy Philippines Inc. (KEPHIL) accompanied the German investors led by Jurgen Unfried of Kasla Group in meeting Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. yesterday to ask for the official’s support for the project.

Defensor welcomed the project and offered to set a meeting between the investors and the mayors next month to discuss the proposal.

Mario Macainan, president and chief executive officer of KEPHIL based in Bacolod City, said the project not only promotes environmental protection and sustainable renewable energy but can also provide livelihood for farmers.

Macainan said their group will provide the farmers “kasla” seedlings while the German investors will buy the “kasla” products.

He said they have initially coordinated with Mayors Alex Centena of Calinog and Reynor Gonzales of Lambunao, who showed interest in the project.

Macainan said KEPHIL, in partnership with the German investors, will establish an expelling plant for oil extraction from jathopha seeds that will have a production capacity of 200 Mio. liters of “kasla” oil per year.

They are targeting at least 80,000 hectares of land planted to jatropha trees and for the production of “kasla” seeds, he said.

Macainan said jatropha is not only an endemic source of sustainable renewable energy, but is also useful in reforestation, soil rehabilitation, and soil erosion.*Robe Jan Ivan Pagulonghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00467812108803615210noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2703915765571489791.post-52528604987513372062010-10-28T16:14:00.000+08:002010-11-04T16:37:11.484+08:00Soon to Rise P25-million City Community College BuildingTHIS IS IT.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, together with Public Employment Service Office manager Alan Zaldivar, will visit Yulin on October 21 to 23 to finalize the pact between the two cities.

Being “sister city” with Yulin involves a cooperative agreement to promote cultural and economic link.
“As their first beneficiary of sisterhood, they are asking if we can send workers to their city to be employed in factories and as English teachers,” Mabilog said.

He said Yulin officials specifically asked him to bring the PESO manager so they can discuss the possible jobs and corresponding hiring process.

Yulin, a city on southeastern Guangxi province, is noted for its rich natural resources, cultural heritage and beautiful scenery.

Mabilog said they got interested in the city when he went to Beihai, China in August for a four-day economic conference.

The Iloilo delegation led by Rep. Jerry Treñas and Mayor Jed Mabilog was tendered a welcome dinner at the MassKara Hall of the New Government Center last October 18 night.

Guest of honor and speaker for the celebration is Senate Majority Leader, Senator Juan Miguel
Zubiri who will be introduced by Councilor Al Victor Espino, chair of the Charter Day celebration committee, said Rodel Parcon, secretary to the mayor.

Part of the celebration is the Banwahanon Award whose recipients are outstanding employees of the city government, executives and taxpayers.

He said the Twinning Agreement cites both cities as “fraternal twins” as “we have the same language, race and culture”.

Vice Mayor Thaddeus Sayson said the Twinning Agreement is very significant because this would mean a joint undertaking with the city government of Iloilo for mutually beneficial projects and programs.

He pointed out that both Iloilo and Bacolod have signed sisterhood pacts with other cities in other regions so the relationship between both LGUs can be further strengthened with the agreement.
So for graduating students, also for those who recently graduated and those "not so fresh" graduates, here are my few tips:

1. IDENTIFY potential employers first and rank them. To start, I recommend listing down companies you really want to work for. Aim high, don't just settle for second-tier companies. In the first place, you are not contacting them or walking in yet, we are still on the stage of just listing down your favorite companies, usually those you really look up to.

In my case, my first priority were Citibank, HSBC, and all those other multinational banks and companies like HP and IBM. Next in line were BPI, BDO, Metrobank, Globe, Smart, usually those top local companies.

2. SELF-ASSESSMENT. Identify your strengths and weaknesses, if possible do a SWOT analysis of yourself in order for you to identify in which field you really belong. In this stage, a lot of factors should be considered like your undergraduate course, your school, your academic and community achievements, your experiences, your KSA (knowledge, skills, abilities), your emotional intelligence, and lastly, SELF-CONFIDENCE (how kapal you are in believing that you could land the best job in the best company).

I finished a computer/business course from a "top" school (you know what I mean), average achievements (nothing I could really boast about), more or less 2 years of work experience in sales, IT and customer service, okay EQ, and an OVERFLOWING self-confidence (which I think is my only asset).

3. Job MATCHING. After identifying the companies you wish to work for and having done assessing your personal qualifications, it should be the right time to match it with the job openings of the companies you listed.

In MATCHING, since I have experience in IT, sales and customer service, I think the best job for me is something like sales or service in the IT or telecommunications industry. But then, my KSA is not really that technical, so more on the business sales and service side, I decided to be in banking. Citibank and HSBC were my first priorities, but since my "kapal" meter was not that high that time, I decided to just settle in a company where I could consider as my stepping stone and would eventually boost my self-confidence and my "kapal" meter to read high.

4. POSITIONING. Okay so you have already identified the company, your qualifications, as well as the industry or field that you think is best for you. Now is the time to postion yourself in the company based on your own judgement and "kapal" factor. Do you want to enter the company from the bottom as a "rank and file" employee, or you think you are qualified enough to be in middle management or supervisory role?

With BPI, there were a lot of options that I could choose from related to my chosen field. I can start as teller and work my way up (which is hard), I could easily be a Phonebanker, because I had call center experience, yet I decided to be a part a Management Training program because it is not a "staff" position (It might be slow going up), it is not an "officership" role either (I think I was not ready yet that time), it's more of a program that trains special hires to become future officers of the bank. So if you think you are capable, there are a lot of good companies out there who really trains people, even fresh graduates, so grab those opportunities.

5. So you're accepted already! After gaining the much needed experience and raising that "kapal" meter to high, it's time to GO BACK to step 1 and REPEAT the steps. (I'm currently on my second lap, step 3!)

Good luck!
It has been leaking by the grapevine that Jollibee is threatened with the rapid and phenomenal success of Mang Inasal. Mang Inasal puts up a branch where Jollibee is and it turns out very favorable to the former as people are more likely to consider true value for their money. Mang Inasal has been notable for its Unlimited Rice offering which is very well accepted by the Filipinos.

Jollibee Foods Corp., the country's largest owner and operator of quick service restaurants, is set to buy the majority stake in Mang Inasal, the Tony Tan Caktiong-led company announced on Monday.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, JFC said its unsolicited offer to buy 70 percent of Mang Inasal Philippines, Inc. for about P3 billion has been "unconditionally and irrevocably accepted" by Injap Investments, Inc., the parent company of Mang Inasal. JFC added that Mang Inasal's acquisition will add five percent to its revenues and seven percent to its net operating income.

The remaining 30 percent will be retained by Injap.

Under the terms, JFC had to give Injap P200 million as initial payment. Ninety percent of the remaining amount or about P2.52 billion will be paid on the closing date of the transaction (30 days upon JFC's completion of due diligence), while the remaining 10 percent will be paid over a period of three years.

Besides improving its revenues and profits, Mang Inasal's acquisition, JFC added, would "also increase JFC's store network in the Philippines by 19 percent and on a worldwide basis by 16 percent."

As of October 18, the Mang Inasal chain has 303 stores, of which 279 are franchised and 24 are company-owned.
It is estimated that Mang Inasal annually earns P2.6 billion and registers sales of P3.8 billion.

"JFC will build shareholder value by growing the sales of Mang Inasal's existing stores through the application of JFC's knowledge of consumers and its available recipes and products, continued expansion of Mang Inasal's store network, cost improvement on its raw materials, and greater operational efficiency...," JFC said.

The company also added that it intends to maintain Mang Inasal's current personnel, subject to their meeting the group’s organizational standards.

Pricewaterhouse Coopers- Isla Lipana & Co. and KPMG-Manabat Sanagustin & Co and Romulo Mabanta, Buenaventura Sayoc and De Los Angeles were tasked to handle the financial, tax and legal due diligence of the transaction.

As of September 30, JFC had a total of 1,578 stores in the Philippines and 375 stores abroad.

Besides Jollibee, JFC also owns Chowking, Red Ribbon, Greenwich and Manong Pepe's. In China it owns and operates Yonghe King and Hong Zhuang Yuan. JFC stores are also present in the US, Vietnam, Brunei and Indonesia.

JFC recently announced that it would be selling its stake in Delifrance.
What in the world are they?

For the locals, they will describe these vehicles for you even when they are sleeping! Literally, it is a bicycle with a tray cart attached to it, large enough to accommodate four passengers sitting back to back, and the sikad driver.

Where on earth can you find these contraptions? Central Visayas is full of them! Iloilo City is filled with them! In fact, the whole Philippine Archipelago inundates with these.

What is it used for? To carry passengers. It is a low cost transportation in Panay Island. In particular, our city, Iloilo City. To most trisikad drivers, as well as operators, these are good sources of income. A lot of Ilonggos patronize them.

Are they safe? You bet they are. So long as you are healthy, it will be one of your unusual rides to your destination. So long as they do not invade the main road arteries, where there are speed limits. It is cool but not so comfortable, but it is cheap!

Is it a good way to earn a living? One never know, but to some it could be source for daily food.
It's old Spanish name was 'Villa Rica de Arevalo' which means that it is amongst the most important Hispanic settlements in the country. Here also lies the third oldest Sto. Niño in the Philippines, one of the city's oldest traditional weaving centres and many of the city's last well preserved colonial houses.

These colonial houses are fine examples of a typical hispanic house or 'Bahay na Bato' wherein the lower half is built of hewn stone or baked bricks while the upper part is built of strong wood.

A trip to Arevalo will not only make you adore it's flower filled streets or it's notable seaside restaurants but in some way, it will make you realize that a 'Once a upon a time' drama did exist along it's peaceful and historic streets like the rest of the city themselves.
Igcadlum. Fr. Tomas Santaren of the Agustinian Order built it in 1869 and it is considered the country’s most militaristic church.

The two stories of the façade are uneven in height, the second being about one-half the dimension of the first. The first story is decorated with rosettes and divided vertically by engaged columns on tall plinths like Guimbal. Composite capitals crown the columns. A plaque above the arched portal displays the Augustinian seal flanked by cherubs.

The façade's striking feature, however, is the disproportionately large pediment. When Fr. Santarén was still building the church news of the victory of Gen. Leopoldo O'Donnel over the Moroccan Crown Prince Muley Abbas reached Iloilo. The Spaniards recaptured Tetuan. Santarén's low relief mural captures the excitement of victory where cavalry and infantry are tearing down Moorish defense, near palms and a minaret. The troops are composed in an ascending spiral with figures of horse and rider becomes smaller the higher they reach. Spaces between the figures are filled with vegetation.

The carving is spread on a mosaic blocks. Each block was carved and set in place. So intricate is the sculpture that even the expression of agony by wounded soldier is visible.Robe Jan Ivan Pagulonghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00467812108803615210noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2703915765571489791.post-35782456509460321032010-10-11T19:38:00.003+08:002010-10-22T14:31:48.605+08:00People’s Condominium by Injap Land soon to rise in IloiloA starting-up homegrown company in the real estate business is making a big leap with its proposed condominium development in Iloilo City. One of its kind and first in the city, Injap Land Corporation will be developing a 71-unit, 6-storey Condominium at the KAPIDECO area in Brgy. San Rafael, Mandurriao. To be constructed right at the corner of Pison Rotunda near Ateneo de Iloilo new site, this welcome development from a very young real estate company will be named People’s Condominium San Rafael.

This development will surely be a catalyst to the looming real estate industry in Iloilo. Although, it may not be deemed necessary to put up condos here right now as we still have ample space for residential developments but this is a strong manifestation of an optimistic trust to the thriving Ilonggo market. It can generate awareness to other businesses that Iloilo’s market is ready for such developments.
Injap Land Corporation is a subsidiary of Mr. Edgar “Injap” Sia’s growing conglomerate that includes the phenomenal Mang Inasal. Aside from the People’s Condominium, Injap Land is also developing a closed-gated subdivision in Mandurriao district named FirstHomes.
The only daughter of a very wealthy couple Don Ignacio Arroyo and Doña Maria Pidal, was born on February 17, 1884 in Molo, Iloilo City, Philippines. She has four brothers, two died in infancy. She was baptized at Sta. Ana church in Molo on February 20, 1884 by Fr. Agapito Buenaflor and was named Maria Beatriz del Rosario Arroyo.

She joined the religious life in the Beaterio de Sta. Catalina in Manila and made her profession on January 3, 1914. After her profession she taught at the Beaterio de Sta. Catalina in Manila and later in Lingayen, Pangasinan. She distinguished herself by a solid piety, love of prayer, life of poverty and strict religious observance. Meanwhile, the last American Bishop of Jaro, the Most Rev. James McCloskey, D.D. made proper preparation for the new foundation the "Beaterio del Sto. Rosario" in Molo, Iloilo City, Philippines. Mother Rosario accompanied by two other Sisters from Sta. Catalina were pioneers of the foundation.

Despite her family background, she was a great lover of poverty and did much to alleviate the miseries of the poor, materially and spiritually. She was well known for her unceasing prayer, purity of life and strict religious observance. She was strict in discipline but only because she herself lived it. During the first General Chapter in 1953 she was elected first Superior General of the Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary of the Philippines (commonly known as Beaterio de Molo).

She died on June 14, 1957. Her remains was exhumed last July 23, 1982 and was transferred to a place in the Dominican Sisters' Motherhouse garden. Last October 7, 2008 feast of the Holy Rosary her remains was transferred to the Motherhouse chapel where it is more accessible to the public to visit and pray. It was attended by three Bishops, 18 priests, about 200 members of the Dominican Laity, several relatives of Mother Rosario, Sisters from the different religious congregations and hundreds of people.

The congregation of the Dominican Sisters has already sent a petition to Archbishop Angel Lagdameo, Archbishop of Jaro, to process her cause for beatification and eventually for canonization.

You are invited to visit Mother Rosario in her new place in the Dominican Sisters Chapel in Molo.
These products of Panay have dominated the catwalks of fashion capitals in Asia, the United States and Europe. Illonggos have noticed the beauty of these local materials.

One of them is Illongga fashion designer Jaki Penalosa, a member of the Designer Guild of Iloilo (DGI.) “I love the imperfections of hablon and pina. I simply am fascinated by and love looking at their patterns,” says Jaki.

A tradition
Jaki’s grandmothers were weavers of hablon and pina. In the 70’s, her parents and aunt opened a business called Philippine Handicrafts and Embroideries which specialized in Philippine handicrafts and shell crafts.Jaki, the fourth among seven children, helped in the business as a designer. She suggested to her mother that they open an Ready-To-Wear (RTW) line, an opportunity where she can introduce her own designs. They had three branches then in the city: in DTI, Hoskyns Compound and Amigo Plaza.

In the 1980s, they exported embroidered caftans to Nigeria, and some products to the United States. When Jaki got married, she became the manager of the three stores. In 1990, she became the owner of Kayumaggi Embroideries, soon renamed to Kayumaggi Designs.

She had her first fashion show in 1993 during the ASEAN Week held at the Indonesian Embassy in Los Angeles, California.“I designed casual clothes then. The models in the show were the children of Pitoy Moreno’s models. A fashion show that featured Renee Salud and myself and a Muslim dance were the presentations of the Philippines, with Tito Sotto and Helen Gamboa introducing us,” she said.At present, she is one of the founding members of The Designers Guild of Iloilo and presently holds a showroom of her collections at the Ground Floor of Robinsons Place Iloilo.

Indigenous and Contemporary Touch
Jaki said that nowadays, she pushes for the use of pina, hablon, and silk cocoon. “it’s about the subtlety, texture, creativity and wearability,” she said.
